In-Home Curtain Cleaning: Expert Answers from a Specialist Cleaner

Many homeowners don’t realise that curtain cleaning can be done in your home — without a single panel being taken down. In-home or on-location curtain cleaning has become one of the most popular services we offer at Carpet Master, and for good reason: it’s convenient, effective, and far less disruptive than traditional dry cleaning.

We sat down with one of our senior cleaning specialists to answer the most common questions about in-home curtain cleaning — straight from the experience of someone who does this work every day.

“How is in-home curtain cleaning actually done?”

Great question — and it’s simpler than most people expect. For in-home cleaning, we use professional-grade steam equipment that generates high-temperature, low-moisture steam. We work from top to bottom across each curtain panel while it’s still hanging on the track.

The steam penetrates deep into the fabric, killing dust mites and bacteria, breaking down embedded dust, and lifting odours from the fibres. Because we use low-moisture steam — not wet cleaning — the curtains are only slightly damp during the process and dry relatively quickly.

For most homes, a standard room of curtains takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

“What types of curtains can be cleaned in the home?”

Most curtains are suitable for in-home steam cleaning, including:

  • Sheer and voile curtains
  • S-fold and wave-fold curtains on ceiling-mounted tracks
  • Lined curtains with polyester or cotton lining
  • Floor-length blockout curtains
  • Eyelet and tab-top styles

The fabrics we’re most cautious with in-home are very delicate silks, heavily embroidered panels, and some antique or heritage fabrics that require specialist attention. In those cases, we’ll usually recommend offsite dry cleaning instead.

“Is steam cleaning as effective as dry cleaning?”

For general maintenance, sanitisation, and odour removal — steam cleaning is actually outstanding. The high-temperature steam (typically between 120–150°C) kills 99% of dust mites and bacteria on contact. It also neutralises odours far more effectively than surface-level sprays.

Where dry cleaning has the edge is with heavy staining and particularly delicate fabrics. If you have curtains with significant staining — red wine, grease, mould — or fabrics like silk or velvet that respond poorly to any moisture, we’d recommend dry cleaning.

For the vast majority of homes doing routine maintenance, however, in-home steam cleaning is perfectly adequate and delivers excellent results.

“Do I need to prepare anything before the cleaner arrives?”

Very little preparation is needed, which is part of why homeowners love this service. Here’s what helps:

  • Clear any furniture that sits directly in front of the curtains — side tables, lounges that are pressed right up against the window
  • Move any decorative items on windowsills or nearby shelves
  • If you have pets, keeping them in another room during the clean is recommended
  • Ensure the floor space beneath the curtains is clear

You don’t need to take anything down, move large furniture, or do any pre-washing. We bring everything we need.

“How long before curtains are dry after steam cleaning?”

This is one of the first things people ask — and it’s very reasonable. Because we use low-moisture steam rather than wet methods, the curtains aren’t saturated. In most cases, they are surface-dry within one to two hours. Full fabric dryness depends on the fabric thickness, room ventilation, and humidity.

We generally recommend opening windows slightly after the clean if weather permits, which speeds up drying. In most homes, curtains are fully dry and back to normal within two to four hours.

“Can you remove mould from curtains in-home?”

This depends on the severity. Light surface mould — the kind that develops on fabric near windows in humid environments — responds very well to steam treatment. The high heat kills active mould spores and, in many cases, significantly reduces visible mould.

For severe mould penetration — particularly where it has gone deep into the fabric or backing — we may recommend a specialised mould treatment or, in extreme cases, replacement may be the more practical option. We’ll always give you an honest assessment.

“How often should I book in-home curtain cleaning?”

For most households, once a year is a good baseline. If you have pets, allergy sufferers, or live in a humid area (which is much of coastal Australia), every six months is better.

We also recommend booking a clean when you first move into a new home — particularly if the previous occupants had pets — and after any renovation work that generates dust.

“What does in-home curtain cleaning cost?”

Pricing varies depending on the size of the curtains, the number of panels, fabric type, and overall condition. At Carpet Master, we provide transparent upfront pricing and are happy to provide an obligation-free quote based on your specific requirements.
